If you’re a business owner or attorney in the Inland Empire, the first thing on your mind probably isn’t to research what Google plans to do to change their algorithm. I’m guessing that with a few weeks until Christmas, you’re probably thinking about accounting, sales, payroll, shipping & receiving and…oh yeah, family. But search engine optimization isn’t always about paying attention when it’s convenient, you must prepare for what Google is going to change. Search Engine Watch just released a great article that comprehensively outlines anticipates Google Algorithm updates. I’ve condensed the information below to make it easier to digest.

Here are the top 8 anticipated Google Algorithm changes for 2014:

  1. Content Quality – No duplicate content, unique and comprehensive information.
  2. High Quality Back Links – Links from other reputable & high authority websites to your website.
  3. Website “Freshness” – This is a signal to search engines that your website is alive and not dormant.
  4. Social Media Participation & Diversity – Are you participating in relevant forums, or authoring content on websites that is relevant to your business?
  5. Google+ – If you’ve been avoiding it, like me, it’s probably time to start adopting and stop lagging.
  6. Mobile – Is your website on an iPad, iPhone or Android just a carbon copy of what users see on a computer? If so, it’s time for an update.
  7. Content Length – There’s some debate as to whether it’s better to have more or less content, but all indications point to having 500-1,000 words per page.
  8. Guest Blogging – Writing for websites that are relevant to your industry is beneficial for a number of reasons, and now it’s a growing SEO element.
